Vatican: The Hidden World is a one hour long documentary which is the result of the BBC being granted unprecedented access into the inner-workings of the Vatican and the people who live there. The finished product is a unique profile of the heart of the Catholic church and the worlds smallest officially recognised sovereign state, one of the worlds most mysterious and powerful institutions.

The filmmakers are granted a private viewing of Michelangelo’s decoration of the Sistine Chapel, observe an inspection of the site which is claimed to be the tomb of St Peter, and get to see the signed testimony of Galileo as recorded by the Inquisition. The BBC also recorded other programmes during their period of access including the three part 2010 series Our Man in the Vatican which followed the UK’s official ambassador to the Vatican as he conducted official duties.
