True Stories: The Battle for Barking

Published on 19th February 2016 by

A 2010 documentary following the campaigns of various political parties in the constituency of Barking in the run up to the 2010 general election, it focused primarily on the campaigns of the Nick Griffin led British Nationalist Party who were seeking to win the seat for their candidate Richard Barnbrook, and of the local Labour Party who were seeking the reelection of the serving MP Margaret Hodge.

The Telegraph newspaper stated that the best thing about the documentary was that it didn’t bash the BNP, because they were doing the job perfectly well themselves. Griffin claimed that they could win the seat of Barking and his party poured a lot its resources into the effort, ultimately they finished third with 14.8% of the vote. Another documentary which looked at the BNP campaign in Barking and Dagenham in 2010 was I’m a Muslim & the BNP got my Vote! which aired on the Islam Channel on Sky TV in the week which followed the election.
