A 2012 Channel 4 Dispatches undercover investigation into the ticket reselling industry. The documentary revealed that major ticket portals such as Seatwave and Viagogo attempt and succeed in giving the impression that they are merely acting as intermediaries between individuals who want to buy or sell event tickets when they are actually obtaining thousands of tickets directly from promoters and artists for resale at hugely inflated prices, the proportion of tickets being sold by normal punters is very small.
The general consumer has no opportunity to purchase these tickets at face value, instead the organisers sell big blocks of tickets directly to this new breed of super-touts. Viagogo unsuccessfully applied for a court injunction to prevent this documentary from being broadcast.
