Space Tourists

Published on 12th February 2017 by

A 2009 feature length documentary by Christian Frei, the film juxtaposes the journeys of extremely rich tourists travelling with astronauts into space from the Baikonur Cosmodrome space launch facility in Kazakhstan with some impoverished Kazakh scrap metal collectors who risk their lives in search for shrapnel which has fallen once the space shuttle has left.

The film follows the first female space tourist, Anousheh Ansari, who has paid $20 million for the privilege of flying into space. It later cuts to scenes of the people who try to bolster their income by searching for pieces of rocket ship shrapnel. Space Tourists premiered at the Zurich Film Festival in 2009 and later won an award at Sundance in 2010 along with awards at numerous other film festivals.
