Scientology: The Ex-Files is a 2010 Australian documentary which attempts, and succeeds, to gain an insight into the inner-workings of the Church of Scientology. It does so not by going undercover but by interviewing men and women from Australia and America who were members of an elite unit inside the church but had since managed to successfully escape the organisation (usually minus the cash that they had prior to joining).
The interviewees explain how they were recruited and were put under constant pressure to work hard to achieve the goals of the church. Some of the shocking revelations in this documentary include claims that members were intentionally excluded from their families, forced to have abortions, and faced severe punishment for not conforming. They also told how members were effectively detained in church owned slave camps as punishment, the church calls these ‘religious retreats’.
