The Scheme

A BAFTA-award winning BBC Scotland series following the lives of six families on a large housing scheme in Kilmarnock in Scotland, screened in 2010 and 2011. There was a long delay between the airing of the first two episodes and the next three episodes due to a court trial being underway for one of the people to feature in the series.

The series received a lot of criticism from sections of the media who labelled it ‘poverty porn’, whilst some residents of the Onthank and Knockinlaw schemes where filming took place were angry at what they perceived to be an unfair impression of the estate, accusing the producers of selecting dysfunctional families for the shock value and ignoring the many people on the estate who are in employment and living normal lives. Each episode lasts 50 minutes and all five episodes are available to watch here on Documentary Vine (see the numbered tabs below the video embed).

Due to the success of this series a similar spin-off series titled The Estate was subsequently filmed on the Ballysally Estate in Coleraine, Northern Ireland, and aired by BBC One Northern Ireland in 2012.
