The hugely successful 2001 movie Hannibal Lecter left everybody who watched it petrified of the prospect of real cannibals walking among us. Anybody who watched it alone in the dark is probably still getting therapy now.
The documentary Real Life Hannibal Lecters was released in the same year and was often given away as a freebie alongside the DVD of the movie, it examines a number of real life cannibal killers, featuring profiles of some of the most disturbing serial killers in history.
Subjects include Ted Bundy, Jeffrey Damner, Albert Fish, and the ‘killer clown’ John Wayne Gacy. Each of the subjects is analysed and compared with the fictional character Hannibal Lecter, some of the similarities are uncanny. The creator of the original Hannibal Lector character, Thomas Harris, later revealed that the real inspiration for the character was killer doctor he had met in a prison in Mexico.
