Moon for Sale is a 2007 BBC Horizon documentary directed by Nick Davidson, it discusses the perceived ‘value’ of the moon in monetary terms to scientists and collectors. Discussed at length in the documentary is the secret underground black market for stolen Apollo era moon rocks which can change hands for as much as $5 million a gram and the film covers Operation Lunar Eclipse where a contraband moon rock is recovered by federal agents in the US.

Also featuring in the film is Apollo 17 astronaut Dr. Harrison Schmitt who discuses the possible future harvesting of Helium 3 from the moon to solve the earths future energy needs. It would be Helium 3 and not mere collectible moon rocks which would be the true prize should man return to the moon and this time establish permanent base, this potential wealth and power is triggering a new international moon race.
