Megastructures – Golden Gate Bridge

The Golden Gate Bridge which links San Francisco to Marin County is one of the worlds most famous bridges, the beautiful three mile long steel structure was built in 1937 and has been declared as a ‘Wonder of the Modern World’ by the ASCE.

Engineers were long concerned however that the bridge wasn’t quite earthquake proof. In 1906 an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.9 hit San Francisco and experts are predicting that earthquakes of similar magnitude will hit San Francisco in the near future.

A complex and expensive project has therefore long been underway to retrofit and strengthen the structure, to ensure that future generations benefit from the beauty of the bridge should the worst happen.

Megastructures – Golden Gate Bridge is a 2004 TV episode which takes a brief look at the history of the bridges construction before exploring the modern day project undertaken to ensure that the bridge is earthquake proof.
