Madonna was not known as the ‘Queen of Pop’ for no reason, she was one of the most successful recording artists in the world during her prime. In fact she was so big that this documentary Madonna: Truth or Dare became the highest grossing documentary of all time when it was released in 1991, it grossed $29 million. It remains one of the top ten most financially successful documentaries even now, 25 years later. It was originally titled In Bed With Madonna: Truth or Dare, before a later repacking came with the shortened title.
The film follows Madonna during her 1990 Blond Ambition World Tour and was actually commission by Madonna herself who hired the director, showing that she had a business mind well ahead of her time. The documentary is shot almost entirely in black and white, only the onstage footage is shot in colour, and numerous celebrities appear in the film including Kevin Costner, Al Pacino, and Olivia Newton-John. Outside North America this film was marketed as In Bed With Madonna.
