Louis Theroux’s LA Stories: City of Dogs

In 2012 legendary British documentary filmmaker Louis Theroux relocated his family to Los Angeles after deciding that he needed a break from London. choosing Los Angeles for the lifestyle and the generally good weather. The BBC rented him a small old office in Hollywood which was originally built by Charlie Chaplin. and Louis and a small team set about developing a mini-series set in Los Angeles. The result is the three part series Louis Theroux’s LA Stories.

City of Dogs is the first of the three episodes and sees Theroux tackle the tough subject of stray and unwanted dogs in Los Angeles, a city where the dog population outnumbers the human population by two to one. Theroux goes on patrol with a man known as ‘Dogman’ who makes it his mission to rescue as many stray pit bulls as he can, spends time at the cities biggest animal shelter where thousands a dogs per year are euthanised, and meets some of the middle-class Americans who adopt a proportion of the cities unwanted canines.
