John Cale, a founding member of the legendary band The Velvet Underground and a former heroin addict, returns to his native Wales to explore the heroin epidemic which is spreading through the country. This hour long documentary was made by BBC Wales for their ‘Week In Week Out’series and broadcast on BBC One in 2009.
There are now so many heroin addicts in Wales that many are unable to get treatment. Cale meets with addicts, drugs workers and politicians and discovers a situation where communities across Wales are being torn apart by the drug. Also worth a watch is the Vice documentary Swansea Love Story, which explores the new heroin epidemic in Swansea, and the BBC Three ‘Drugs Map of Britain’ episode Injecting Gone Wrong: Swansea.
