Gypsy Child Thieves

Romanian filmmaker Liviu Tipurita grew up in Romania and has been making films about Roma gypsies and human trafficking for many years, in the course of making this 2009 documentary Gypsy Child Thieves he gains unprecedented access inside the closed world of the gypsy community to see what happens to children trafficked into wealthier European countries.

He reveals how they survive by aggressively begging and by committing crimes such as ATM theft and pick-pocketing, but also lifts the lid on some of the racism that they experience. Most of the filming takes place in Spain where he gets on the inside of a Spanish based group of Roma, but also travels back to Romania where he meets up with some of the most powerful figures in the Roma underworld.
