The Great Hip Hop Hoax

Published on 18th April 2016 by

A 2013 documentary by Jeanie Finlay about two young Scottish men who formed a hip-hop duo called Silibil N’ Brains and then pretended to be American rappers from California in order to secure a £250,000 record deal by Sony in the early 2000’s.

The two men, Gavin Bain and Billy Boyd, opened gigs for big name acts including D12 and appeared on MTV during a brief brush with super-stardom but structural changes at their record label left them without any supporters at the label, they subsequently split up and returned to Scotland.

NB: Unfortunately this documentary is currently trailer only, due to the source video being removed. We will replace should an alternative become available, in the meantime it is available to stream on Amazon.

Gavin Bain, the one who revealed the hoax publicly, authored a book about their rise with fame and subsequent downfall. California Schemin’ was published in 2010 by Simon & Schuster. It was also printed with the alternative title Straight Outta Scotland.
