Published on 18th March 2016 by

An undercover investigation by BBC Scotland into the growing use of legal highs in the UK. it explores where the drugs come from and the supply chain all the way up to the user. The UK is in the grips of a synthetic drug epidemic, with underworld chemists constantly creating new variations of sometimes dangerous chemicals to keep one step ahead of the authorities. As quickly as the government can ban a substance a new one can be created and brought to market.

The film makers used a leading forensic toxicology lab to investigate the chemicals contained within the drugs that can be obtained from the streets and which are typically produced in China. The results showed that they contained synthetic cannabinoids which are as strong as LSD or Amphetamines.
