In 2013 the BBC broadcast a documentary which explores the five most important single years of David Bowie’s career, using his songs and archive footage to present a timeline which showed the genius of Bowie and perfectly laid out the way that he would reinvent himself to remain relevant and influential. That documentary was called David Bowie: Five Years, which was of course also the title of a well known Bowie track.
On 10th January 2016 Bowie died after a battle with cancer, and almost one year after his passing on 7th January 2017 the BBC aired this second feature length documentary which looked back at the final five years of his life, David Bowie: The Last Five Years. That period proved very productive with the release of his final two studio albums, The New Star and Blackstar, as well as the composition of a musical called Lazarus. The documentary also marked the eve of what would have been his 70th birthday.
