A 2014 documentary which explores the effects of animal agriculture on the environment and the policies of major environmental organisations such as Greenpeace on the issue, Cowspiracy was entirely crowdfunded by the directors Kip Anderson and Keegan Kuhn, raising $117,092 from 1449 individual backers on the crowdfunding platform IndieGoGo.

The crowdfunding campaign was so successful that the surplus money raised allowed the film to be dubbed into two other languages – Spanish and German, and subtitled in 10 others. A new cut of the film, directed by Leonardo DiCaprio, was released in 2015. The film has been credited for helping thousands to decide to stop eating red meat, or even stop eating meat entirely.

The film makers authored a companion book, The Sustainability Secret: Rethinking Our Diet to Transform the World, which is effectively the documentary in book form. Buying this book for an avid reader would be a great way to introduce them to the message you garnered from the film.
