The Challenge… A Tribute to Modern Art is an Academy Award nominated 1975 documentary film directed by Herbert Kline, it explores the world of modern art and consists primarily of unique footage of great modern artists working in their studios and commenting on their own work. The documentary is narrated by the late Orson Welles. In 2003 the documentary was released on DVD with the alternative title Modern Art: A Complete Guide.
Artists to feature in the film include Chagall, Moore, Dali, De Kooning, Matisse, Picasso, Giacometti, Duchamp and Pollock and the film attempts to explore various stylistic developments including impressionism, expressionism. fauvism, cubism, futurism, surrealism, pop art and conceptualism. Some footage was also shot at the Louvre, the Guggenheim and The Museum of Modern Art
