Bill Gates was the richest man in the world at the time, and one of the most famous men in the world too, but Bill Gates is often an elusive and mysterious figure who values his privacy and the privacy of his children. So selective is he with his public appearances that it took two years of extensive negotiations with Microsoft for BBC Two’s Money Programme to secure an interview with him.
In Bill Gates: How A Geek Changed The World (2009) Fiona Bruce conducts that interview just as Gates was preparing to step down from his role at Microsoft to run the worlds largest charitable foundation, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. It was the first time cameras had been allowed on the inside for around 15 years.
The documentary explores the founding and growth of the company but focuses primarily on what the future had in store now that the face of the company, its talisman, was departing. There are contributions to the film from various friends, colleagues, and business rivals.
