Bible’s Buried Secrets is a three part 2011 BBC series presented by theologian Dr Francesca Stavrakopoulou, the series examines how modern day archaeological discoveries are changing the way that some people interpret various stories in the bible, with the series focusing on three particular stories. This series is not to be confused with the 2008 PBS Nova documentary The Bible’s Buried Secrets which followed a similar theme.

Episode 1: Did King David’s Empire Exist?

In the first episode Stavrakopolou asks whether King David really ruled an Israelite Kingdom and whether he even really existed, she visits archaeological excavations and examines evidence for and against the biblical account of King David.

Episode 2: Did God Have a Wife?

In the second episode she asks whether Israelite’s really did believe in just one god as the bible claims, she studies the original Hebrew text of the bible and explores new archaeological sites in Syria and the Sinai. She asks whether the Israelite’s were really polytheists and questions whether it is possible that god had a wife.

Episode 3: The Real Garden of Eden

In the third and final episode Stavrakopoulou argues that the Garden of Eden has nothing to do with the origins of humanity. She identifies and visits the exact site of the Garden of Eden, examines archaeological evidence and studies Islam and the bible to challenge preconceptions about Eden.
