How Beer Saved the World

An hour long Discovery Channel documentary broadcast in 2011, the film takes a look at the history of beer and the influence that it has had on major historical events including the creation of modern medicine and even the building of the pyramids in Egypt, and modern beer innovations such as a special brew designed for consumption by astronauts in zero gravity.

Numerous scientists and historians feature to put forward the case that beer could in fact be the most important ever human invention, arguing that beer itself has played an important role in the creation of math, poetry, labour laws, and more. If it wasn’t for beer, would we still be living in the dark ages?

This documentary inspired a 2013 fiction book of the same name, How Beer Saved The World, an anthology of fourteen science fiction stories which adopt a theme of the world being saved by beer.
