Cocaine Cowboys provides a look at the illicit drug trade that overtook the Miami landscape during the 1980s. This documentary looks at the Colombian drug kingpins who ran the trade throughout the era and the violence that they unleashed upon the region.
Director Billy Corben offers interviews with the law enforcers, journalists, lawyers, former drug smugglers, and gang members who played a role in Miami’s notorious drug war. Among other things, the tricks behind how drugs were funnelled into the area and how legitimate businesses were used to cover up the illicit trade are explored. It also takes a look at how the economic expansion of the city benefited from the often-violent trade.
The Miami drug scene of the 1980s served to inspire the popular television show Miami Vice. Fittingly, musician Jan Hammer who provided the show’s theme song also provides the soundtrack here.
