Wigstock: The Movie is a feature length 1995 documentary which focuses on Wigstock, an annual drag music festival that was held in New York throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s. The film makes extensive use of live performance footage from the 1994 footage, artists featured include RuPaul, Debbie Harry, Crystal Waters, Jackie Beat, and many more. The filmmakers go behind the scenes at the festival, showing how it was all put together including insight into the rehearsal process and the assembling of the stages.
Attendees are interviewed about their experiences at the festival and some of the artists contribute to explain the importance of the festival to their lives. A 18 track soundtrack album was released on CD to coincide with the film, it was also released on DVD in North America (Region 1).
