Who Needs Sleep? Is a 2006 documentary by Haskell Wexler which attempts to highlight the dangerous effects of long working hours and a lack of sleep and the problem of chronic sleep deprivation in modern day Western society. The film focuses primarily on Hollywood and the film industry, where people routinely work 16+ hours per day whilst working on creative projects, putting work before their health and families.
The film asks whether putting everything into pursuing career goals is worth losing sleep over, and asserts that working too much and sleeping too little is a deadly combination. Wexler, a multiple Oscar winner, was inspired to make this documentary after cameraman Brent Hershman died after falling asleep at the wheel of his car after consistently working excessive hours on a film set.
