On October 12th 1978 in New York police discovered the dead body of a young woman slumped in the bathroom of a hotel room, the lady was dressed in only underwear and had bled to death from a stab wound. The lady was Nancy Spungeon, a 20 year old heroin addict, stripper and ex-prostitute who was the current girlfriend of Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious.
The tabloid media found Sid guilty of her murder, which he denied. He died himself of a heroin overdose just six months later at the age of 21, before the case could get to trial. A number of New York cops were not convinced that Nancy had been killed by Sid, but the conclusion that the public and the media reached was that Sid Vicious had murdered her.
In 1996, almost two decades after Spungeon’s death, Sid’s mother reached out to punk expert Alan Parker and requested that he look into the murder to try and ascertain what really happened that night. Parker devoted himself to investigating the case and re-interviewed some 182 people and poured over every file of NYPD evidence, the result of his investigation lead to the production of this feature length 2009 documentary Who Killed Nancy?
Nancy’s mother, Deborah Spungen, published a bestselling book about her daughters life and death And I Don’t Want to Live This Life: A Mother’s Story of Her Daughter’s Murder, available in paperback, hardback, and kindle editions.
