Vice co-founder Suroosh Alvi travels to the war torn Democratic Republic of Congo, one of the poorest countries in the world, and undertakes a physically and mentally challenging trekking to see where the mineral Coltan comes from. It is Coltan, a mineral which is essential in the production of cell phones and computers, which has driven the ongoing conflict in Eastern Congo.

Revenues from Coltan production has both fueled violence and funded the groups who fight for control over it since the 1970’s. Coltan will be in the device you are using to watch this documentary right now, whether that is your laptop, your smartphone, your tablet, or your television set. For more on the subject also consider watching the one hour long documentary Blood Coltan.
