The Last Lioness is an award winning documentary following the lioness Lady Liuwa across the Liuwa Plain National Park in Zambia. Lady Liuwa is the last of her species in the park and has been for many years. She has no pride, no support, and must protect and feed herself without assistance. Lady Liuwa has been isolated as a result of illegal trophy hunting, with all members of her pride and all other prides in the park being wiped out by mostly Western hunters seeking a quick frill and a token photo with their kill.
The cameraman Herbert Brauer followed Lady Liuwa for four years until her loneliness became too much to bare and she reached out to him for companionship, this documentary film is the result of that four years of filming. Since the completion of this documentary other lions have been relocated to the park in the hope that they would form new prides, their introduction is however a big risk to the ageing Liuwa.
