The Estate was an eight episode 2012 BBC One series which followed the lives of several families on the impoverished Ballysally housing estate in Coleraine, Northern Ireland, it was broadcast by the BBC in England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales. It was a spin-off from a similar show filmed in Scotland and broadcast in 2011 and 2012, The Scheme. Each episode lasts one hour and all can be streamed here on Documentary Vine (see the numbered tabs below the video embed).
Programmes such as The Estate and The Scheme attracted a lot of criticism in the United Kingdom and accused of being ‘poverty porn’, exploiting people for the amusement of the better off, some residents of the respective estates also complained that the families chosen were not representative of the residents and showed the estates to be much worse than they are in reality. The Belfast Telegraph published an article in 2016 which gave an update on some of the people to appear in the series.
