The Crazy Gang is a 2014 BT Sport documentary about the famous Wimbledon F.C. teams of the late 80’s and early 90’s, they were labelled the Crazy Gang due to the cheeky and sometimes aggressive nature of the Wimbledon players. New players were subjected to intense initiation rituals and many couldn’t cope with the environment at the training ground. On the pitch the team would often play overly aggressively as a means of winning games against much more naturally talented sides.
In the documentary several well known Wimbledon players from the era recall stories, for example Vinny Jones describes the time that John Fashanu violently attacked a team mate at the training ground. Fashanu himself features and appears to revel in the glory of the notoriety that the team gained. Some former members of the team, and the clubs former chairman Sam Hamam, later complained about the way BT edited the documentary to focus too much on the aggressive nature of the squad.
Dave Bassett, Wimbledon manager between 1981 and 1987, and Wally Downes who played for Wimbledon between 1979 and 1988, co-authored the book The Crazy Gang, published in 2015 by Bantam Press and available in paperback, hardback, and kindle editions. The book has been very well received.
