The Battle for Marjah is a 2010 documentary by British writer and television presenter Ben Anderson for HBO, it follows 1st Battalion 6th Marines regiment during their endeavors in Operation Moshtarak which was the largest joint operation in the Afghanistan war.
The 2010 operation involved 15000 American, British, Canadian, Estonian, Danish and Afghan troops and it intended to remove the last remaining Taliban stronghold in central Helmand province.
Ben Anderson spent a total of two months on the front line with the regiment and the resulting story is an intimate and harrowing one which emphasizes the grim and brutal nature of war. It also provides a great insight into the failures of the operation which took nine months and at one stage saw the Taliban regain their hold over the province. The film is widely considered to be one of the best documentaries about the Afghanistan war produced.
Ben Anderson made numerous trips to Afghanistan to produce content for BBC Panorama, HBO, and Channel 4 Dispatches, and in 2012 published the gritty and brutally honest book No Worse Enemy: The Inside Story Of The Chaotic Struggle for Afghanistan, a book which tells the true but grim story of the war on the front line. It is available in paperback, hardback, or kindle editions.
