The Ascent of Money: A Financial History of the World is the tenth book of Scottish born Harvard Professor Niall Ferguson, who in 2004 was named by Time Magazine as one of the top 100 most influential people in the world. The book tells the history of money from its earliest use as a trade form and tracks its development all the way up to its effects on society in the 21st century when the world had to deal with a major global financial crisis. The book was published in November 2008, at the height of the credit crunch.
The hugely successful book was subsequently adapted into a six episode documentary series for television and aired by Channel 4 in the UK and PBS in the United States in January 2009, the series was given the title The Ascent of Money: Boom and Bust.
