A 2004 PBS documentary series on the history African American slavery, exploring the slaves treatment at the hands of their masters, their contribution to American society, and their eventual liberation. It covers the history from the beginnings in the British colonies to the end of slavery in America. The first episode opens with the introduction of 11 men of African descent into slavery New Amsterdam.

The series covers famous African Americans including Colonel Tye, and other important historical American figures including President George Washington. The series was released alongside a companion book, Slavery and the Making of America, authored by the academics James Oliver Horton and Lois E. Horton. It is available in paperback, hardcover, and kindle edition.
