A two part documentary by Louis Theroux, both initially broadcast in May 2011, it follows Theroux as he spends time in the Miami-Dade County Jail system. Each episode is one hour long.
Theroux spends time in the ‘Main Jail’ (Pre-Trial Detention Center), one of the most notorious sections of the jail system, including a visit to the fifth and sixth floors which is home to some of the most violent and volatile of the inmates in the jail. Despite all inmates being pre-Trial, and therefore presumed innocent until proven guilty, this part of the jail has developed a strange and violent jail culture. The men may only leave their cells, which each hold 24 men, twice per week for ‘yard time’. The inmates fight each other for status and to relieve boredom.
In the second episode Theroux looks at other parts of the jail system, including a visit to solitary confinement where he meets somebody accused of three murders. If convicted he faces the death penalty. He then explores the Miami-Dade Boot Camp where around forty young inmates are undertaking a four-month military style Boot Camp, if they can complete the grueling four month camp they will avoid jail and get a second chance in life.
