Born Again Christians (1998) is the first ever Louis Theroux documentary, the first episode of the first series of Louis Theroux’s Weird Weekends. He visits Dallas to explore the world of fundamentalist Christians, meeting TV evangelists Marcus Lamb and Joni Lamb and follows a hardline groups of Christians known as The Family (now known as Family International) as they visit the main entertainment district of Dallas. The episode is also known as ‘Televangelists’.
This documentary was produced a few years after Marcus Lamb and Joni Lamb founded their Daystar Television Network, which has since grown to become the second largest Christian TV network in the world which broadcasts in over 200 countries and has an estimated business value of $230m. A decade after the first episode of Louis Theroux’s Weird Weekends, and eight years after the last, Theroux released a 2008 follow up book The Call of the Weird: Encounters with Survivalists, Porn Stars, Alien Killers, and Ike Turner, in which he provides an update on what has happened to many of the subjects.
