Louis Theroux: America’s Medicated Kids

A 2010 Louis Theroux documentary following Theroux as he visits one of America’s leading psychiatric treatment centres and examines the effects of putting kids with obsessive compulsive disorders on prescription medication, a growing number of US parents are medicating their kids in order to help them cope with their behavioral challenges despite the drugs used remaining controversial.

Theroux meets 10 year old Hugh who has been diagnosed with multiple conditions, namely ADHD, Bipolar disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, and Asperger’s syndrome. He moves in with the family to learn more about his controversial diagnoses and the range of medications he is given to manage them. Amongst the other patients he meets is Jack, a 6 year old boy who has been excluded from school for behavioral issues and now take antidepressants to treat his anxiety.
