Leaving Amish Paradise

In 2009 the BBC documentary Trouble in Amish Paradise told the stories of two young Amish couples who were facing excommunication (being shunned by their community) for daring to question some of the community rules, particularly the rule that Amish people can only read the German language bible which was brought to America by their forefathers. Very few Amish people can actually interpret the German language bible as they mostly read, write, and speak in English.

This 2011 follow up documentary Leaving Amish Paradise follows the same two couples as they try to adapt to non-Amish life after being thrown out of the church and their community. The couples retained their faith in god and didn’t move far away from their community, but did make numerous other changes to their way of life.
