The Whitechapel Murders remain possibly the most famous unsolved murders in the world. In 1888, in the impoverished Whitechapel area of East London, the bodies of five dead female prostitutes were found with cut throats and abdominal mutilations. Three of the bodies had internal organs removed, leading to speculation that the murderer was somebody with surgical knowledge. The mystery serial killer became known as ‘Jack the Ripper’, a name which was given by the sender of a letter which claimed to have been sent by the killer, the letter is now believed to have been a hoax.
The murders remain unsolved but ‘ripperology’ lives on, there have been over one hundred theories about the murderers identity. Jack The Ripper: The Definitive Story is a 2011 British television documentary which was shown in two parts on Channel 5, it attempts to go back to basics and dispel some of the many myths which surround the case. It uses computer graphics and actors to recreate the night of each murder with the aid of original witness statements and official coroner reports.
