How Drugs Work was a three part 2011 BBC series which examines the science behind the use of various narcotics. In this first episode visual effects and CGI are used to take the viewer on a trip inside the human body and shows the effect of the drug on the brain. The film features contributions from people who use marijuana recreationally as well as those who claim to have become addicted to using it.

The filmmakers use science to explore various myths about cannabis abuse and reveals whether the drug is either physically addicted and discuss the mental health consequences of regular use. The second episode in the trilogy was How Drugs Work: Ecstasy, and the third was How Drugs Work: Cocaine
