From Wales To Timbuktu

A BBC Wales documentary which follows four specially selected students from Gwernyfed High School in Hay-on-Wye as they embark on an adventure to Timbuktu in Mali, which is the twin town of Hay-on-Wye, on a 10 day literary adventure. The four students immersed themselves in the local culture and recorded their experiences in diaries and written notes.

The four students were accompanied by a writing mentor, the author Tom Bullough, who was involved in the selection process. Timbuktu and Hay-on-Wye couldn’t be much more different culturally but the fall on precisely the same longitude line and are both famous for literature, Timbuktu is the oldest home of the written word in the entire continent of Africa and is famous for its large number of private and public libraries, whilst Hay-on-Wye has gained the title of the second-hand book capital of the world.
