Michael Mosley has set himself the goal of living longer, living healthier, and losing some weight. He explored the science behind a theory that changing eating patterns to involve periods of fasting can improve your health and help you to live longer, and aired the results in this 2012 BBC Horizon episode. Mosley wants to make changes which allow him to still enjoy his food, rather than eating salad everyday, and believes that fasting – eating what he wants and then eating nothing at all for a period – may be the answer.
The filming takes place in the United States where the new dietary trend of intentional periodic calorie consumption has gained a big following of people convinced that it is the key to a healthy and happy life. It is believed that fasting for a few days a time, one every month or two, can massively reduce the risk of a number of age related diseases. The compromise that most are adopting is to eat very few calories one day and then feast on the next day, semi-fasting on alternate days.
