A 2016 episode of BBC Panorama which explores the diabetes epidemic which is currently affecting the United Kingdom and threatening to overwhelm the NHS, an increasing number of people are being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes which is a hidden killer and can lead to heart failure, kidney disease, blindness, and even limb amputations. People usually associate diabetes with older people but an increasing number of children are now being diagnosed with the disease.

The documentary was filmed over a six month period and is focused on the city of Birmingham where almost one in ten people have the disease. In the year 2000 there had been no children in the UK ever diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and doctors at a hospital in Birmingham were baffled when they came across their first case, there are now over 500 children battling the disease.
