A 1992 BBC Panorama documentary examining a sharp increase in crack cocaine use in the United Kingdom. The programme explored the routes that the international drug smugglers took to import the unprocessed cocaine into the country and discussed the link between crack cocaine demand and an increase in Jamaican yardie gun violence at the time, during this time period the drugs trade – particularly in London – was being controlled by Yardie gangs.

The crack cocaine epidemic of the early 1990’s eventually subsided, and arguably the biggest epidemic now facing the country are ‘legal highs’, synthetic drugs designed to mimic the effects of illegal narcotics but with a chemical makeup which renders them legal, check out the Vice documentary Spice Boys which explores the problem of synthetic marijuana addiction in the city of Manchester.
