Britain was once famous for being a nation of tea drinkers, but coffee has been booming since the major coffee shop brands began to take off in the 1990’s and now millions are hooked – spending up to £2000 per year on their Americano’s, espressos, and latte’s. The industry thrived even through the major recession which followed the last financial crisis.

This 2014 episode of BBC Business Boomers explores the competitive world of coffee in the UK, where several major players are in fierce competition with each other and with smaller chains and independents. The show looks at how the nation became so obsessed with coffee in such a short time, and how the big brands like Starbucks, Costa Coffee, and Cafe Nero compete for your business.
