On the 20th February 2016 the British Prime Minister David Cameron announced the date at which the country would hold a referendum on whether the UK should continue to be a member of the European Union. What he didn’t know at the time is that he would also be setting the date for his resignation and then a bitter battle among Tory MP’s for the right to take his job.
During this period the BBC had exclusive access behind the scenes to see the inner workings of the official Leave campaign, the reaction to their win, and the resulting leadership battle which followed that campaigns success. The documentary lays bares the ruthless ambition of some of the individuals involved, some of whom had clearly been positioning themselves in anticipation of Cameron’s resignation long before the event.
Featuring in the documentary are prominent pro-Leave politicians such as Boris Johnson, Iain Duncan Smith, and Nigel Farage, as well as leading figures from the remain side including Lord Heseltine and Will straw.
