In the 2007 documentary The Most Hated Family in America the popular British documentary film maker Louis Theroux gained access to the heart of the Westboro Baptist Church, a church organisation with extreme views on various issues – particularly homosexuality. The organisation had gained notoriety by picketing at the funerals of US servicemen with offensive banners.
The Most Hated Family in America In Crisis is a 2011 follow up documentary which sees Theroux return to the USA after being contacted by members who had since left the church. He meets with members who had left the church to gain an insight into the internal problems within the church and the deserters attempts to adjust to life outside.
Lauren Drain, the daughter of Steve Drain who features in Theroux’s first documentary about the family, was banished from the church and wrote about her experiences in the church, and her struggles adapting to normal life, in the 2013 book Banished: Surviving My Years in the Westboro Baptist Church. Available as a hardcover or paperback.
