The charismatic Alex Salmond was the leader of the Scottish Nationalist Party (SNP) for over a decade between 2004 and 2014, and the First Minister of Scotland for 8 years. During his time at the helm of the SNP he is credited with transforming the party from a fringe group to a major contender.
A Rebel’s Journey is a documentary which was broadcast at around the time Salmond stood down as leader of the SNP after he led the unsuccessful referendum campaign which saw Scottish people vote to remain part of the United Kingdom. The documentary looks into his history, his beliefs, and the legacy that he would leave behind.
It would later transpire that his legacy hadn’t finished being written of course, he subsequently campaigned hard in the 2015 general election and won a seat in the UK parliament, a journey charted in the 2015 documentary The Rise of the SNP.
